Fans quickly took to social media to support Burkhardt.

Others weren’t so happy about it.

An Avalanche-Journal reader emailed a reporter saying, “This kid should be fined or sanctioned! So disrespectful and has no place in college athletics. It makes me ashamed to be a graduate.”

The stunt even garnered national attention when former President Donald Trump’s campaign social media account posted the endorsement.

As of 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Texas Tech University or Texas Tech Athletics had not released an official statement about the incident.
