President Mayor Coach SID Edwards on Tuesday morning presented two new public safety initiatives during a press conference at the mayor’s office in an attempt to cope with the increasing crime rates and strengthen law enforcement.

The Baton Rouge Police Department launches a pilot program to allow retired employees to return to the workforce without losing their retirement benefits. Recently, governor Jeff Landry has signed a new law that allows employees enrolled in the municipality’s retirement system to re -enter the active duty as they continue to receive retirement benefits.

“Our police need experienced officers who can provide mentoring, leadership and immediate support for our community,” Edwards says. “By returning our retired officers, we strengthen our commitment to public safety and guarantee that we have the experienced staff needed to effectively fight crime.”

The second initiative, launched in partnership with Crimestoppers, is called the “First 48 Boost Rewards” and aims to stimulate community involvement in crime resolution.

Moving forward, Crimestoppers tips leading to arrest and accusation within 48 hours of a one -time murder will lead to a double award worth up to $ 5,000. In cases of multiple killings, the award has increased to $ 10,000.

Edwards listed public safety and addresses increasing crime among its most priorities During his office campaignS Last month, Edwards told Rotary Club of Baton Rouge that his goal is to hire 100 new police officers.
