Families and railway employees donned their best Halloween costumes as there were activities throughout the day for those traveling to the tourist attraction.
As part of three Halloween events Weardale Railway is running this spooky season, the train departed Stanhope before passengers were treated to a Halloween quiz on board.
Those traveling enjoyed stunning autumn views of Stanhope, Frosterlie, Walsingham and Witton-le-Wear while on the train.
Other activities on the day included a ghost talk, a cafe serving Halloween treats and a costume contest.
All the children at the event were dressed in brilliant costumes ranging from witches, bats and a child dressed as Jim Carrey’s ‘The Mask’.
Although this was not the first Halloween event Weardale Railway has organized over the years, Wayne Dixon, who is the railway’s general manager, has seen the popularity of this type of special event grow significantly.
He said: “It was great to see so many people dressed up today – it made the hour and a half journey fly by – it was a great atmosphere from the families who attended.
“It’s fair to say the popularity has grown since we came out of the pandemic – it’s great to see.

“We probably could have done more events, but we wanted to make it special for those attending our three events this Halloween.”
These Halloween events come at the same time as Weardale Railway’s sold out Dark Skies train event.
During this event, there will be a train that departs from Stanhope to “a unique location where you will disembark and enjoy stargazing using telescopes and listening to our experts from the Bishop Auckland Astronomical Society”.
