WV DOH is preparing for the next winter storm – The Dominion Post

Morgantown – With more winter time on the road, the West Virginia Ministry of Transport said on Monday that it encouraged all motorists to use extreme attention on the roads, as the department of highways in West Virginia is working to keep them clear.

The National Meteorological Service has released Winter Storm Watch for much of Mountain State, which will be in force on Wednesday. A winter mix can be expected in forecasting snow accumulation ranging from 1-2 inches at lower hills to 5-8 inches at higher hills.

“We will be out to do some preliminary treatment with brine around the state tonight and we are ready to work around the clock, even before the snow starts falling,” says Jacob Bumgarner, chief engineer of special programs and acting chief engineer of regional operations. “The efficiency of what we do, we hope to see because of the temperature that remains exactly around freezing or slightly above it, which is not what we saw with the last winter storm.”

In the WVDOT 4 neighborhood, which includes the Monongalia and Preston districts and some of the most mountainous terrains in the state, road crews are well practiced in ice and snow control, DOT said.

“Workers will work around the clock for 24 -hour coverage,” said region 4 Earl Gaskins. “The first shift will cover the preparation, with snowfall equipped and ready to go out; And the second shift will cover 12 hours of snow removal from the road sails as soon as the first snow begins to fall. “

After the winter began with 231,000 tonnes of salt, Bumgarner said Wvdoh still has a lot on hand as they prepare for another round of winter.

“There have been some situations where we have moved salt into some of our smaller sheds from the bigger ones,” Bumgarner said. “But there is a lot of salt to respond adequately to this storm.”
