TALLAHSEE Celebrates Myers Park Centennial along with Arbor Day Planting – WFSU News

The town of Talahasi held a double celebration for Myers Park on Saturday, February 8th. The event also provided help with landscaping those living around the park.

City Parks, Brian Hopper, said there were two reasons for people to go to the park on Saturday.

“We are here and make our Arbor Day event and we also celebrate the 100th anniversary for Myers Park.”

Hopper said planting trees this year is especially necessary. The park lost hundreds of trees during the tornado of last May. These storms also hit the ownership of Kurt and Whitney Gray’s Woodland Drive. After helping with public planting, they received several residual trees to replace some of the lost ones.

“We have 3 river birch and 1 pin oak,” Gray noted.

As for the centenary of Myers Park, the history of the site actually precedes 100 years. The Appalachi people were already there when Hernando Desoto arrived in 1539.
