Posting on TripAdvisor, they said: “I went to the Bowes Museum as part of Heritage Week in September. A brilliant day out. The staff welcomed and advised on what to see and the weather at The Swan. The exhibition of Lowry and other artists was breathtaking.

“I like the history of the time that set the scene. I appreciate that we were able to go out on the grounds for a rest before coming back to explore more. Such a variety that should mean something to everyone.”

Meanwhile, people were equally impressed by Raby Castle, with one visitor saying online: “We visited the castle earlier in the year for a car show. Then we toured the castle and walked around the grounds. Such a wonderful place.

“A member of staff told us we could book a backstage tour, which we did today. Despite the terrible weather we had a wonderful experience with a great guide who was not only knowledgeable but also fun.’

By car: Staindrop is easily accessible by car, approximately 20 miles from Durham city and approximately 40 miles from Newcastle. If you’re coming from London, it’s about a 5 hour drive.

By train: The nearest train station is Darlington which has links to major cities such as London, Edinburgh and Newcastle. From Darlington you can take a taxi or local bus to Staindrop (about 13 miles).

By bus: Buses from Darlington and Durham serve the village, although timetables may be infrequent. It is recommended to check in advance.
