FORT WORTH — Josh Hoover threw three touchdown passes, including an 84-yarder to Eric McAllister with 5:10 left, that lifted TCU to a 35-34 victory over the Texas Tech football team on Saturday at Amon Carter Stadium.

TCU (5-3, 3-2 in the Big 12) started a 31-14 comeback with a 1-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Payne. After a Gino Garcia field goal put Tech (5-3, 3-2) up 34-21, Hoover threw an 8-yard TD pass to DJ Rogers with 8:42 left before connecting with McAlister deep down the left sideline .

Tech drove to the 27-yard line, but freshman quarterback Will Hammond fumbled with 1:38 left. Hammond appeared to try to run the ball up the middle to set up a game-winning field goal, but Hakeem Ajiolaiya knocked the ball away and Marquis Deal recovered.

Defense: C

Three sacks and three takeaways is exactly what it takes to win as an underdog on the road, but the group lost focus late.

Special Teams: B

The season-long streak of consecutive field goals ended at 14. However, Gino Garcia made two and a fake field goal TD redeemed the miss.

Coach: C

Joey McGuire’s staff did well for three quarters, working around injuries at key positions (quarterback, running back, left tackle, free safety), but didn’t close the deal.

Overall: C

In back-to-back weeks, Tech played its worst game of the season against Baylor and blew a 17-point lead and suffered its toughest loss at TCU. Now everyone will see what the Red Raiders are made of.
