The St. Paul Police Department has confirmed that two deceased people were found in the garage fire of the 1800 Avenue Sims block.

St. Paul, Min. – St. Paul’s fire investigator works to determine what caused a fire in a garage where two men were found dead on Sunday.

According to the city’s fire service, crews arrived in the 1800 block of Avenue Sims shortly after noon and found a garage “completely absorbed” by fire.

The crews extinguished the flame, but during the search of the home they found two dead casualties inside, according to the statement.

A preliminary investigation by the department suggests that two people lived in the garage and the fire began when a space heater was demolished. St. Paul’s fire assistant Hieramia Melquist said one of the deceased was in the early sixties and was the son of the homeowner; The other man is not identified.

“Heavy fire and heavy fire conditions seem to have blocked the exit of the garage service door,” according to the fire department.

“It’s sad. It’s a pity,” Melquist said, confirming the first death of a fire in the city this year.

Melquist emphasized the need for caution when using space heaters. The department added that “wrong heating” is the leading cause of fatal fires in Minnesota during low temperatures.

Home residents have been temporarily moved, according to a department message.

According to St. Paul Melvin Carter Mayor, the east side of the city sees more fires than other areas. Melquist said this is due to a number of factors. The older structures can be one of the reasons, Melquist said. Carter said he hoped an additional fire station and more staff would help.

According to the fire department, “the city is an average of two to three deaths per year.”
