The cities of Chino and Ontario expect to open an animal shelter temporarily this summer, offering services that are currently provided by the Human Society of the Internal Valley.

The temporary shelter is planned to take over an existing warehouse while employees are working to identify a permanent home for a new animal services department that will serve both cities.

“We put our heart and soul to get this organization to work, and it’s a transportation, and there are many more,” said Ontario Deputy Manager Jordan Vilvok in an interview. “I know this will be successful and we are really excited to bring this new service to the local level.”

The two cities concluded a joint powers agreement in July 2024 on the management of animal services, according to the city of Ontario.

In addition, Montclair and unaccorpted areas of San Bernardino County, which includes San Antonio Heights north of UPLAND, will eventually be served by the new shelter.

According to the city, the agreement between cities follows the decision of Humane Society Inland Valley to cancel its contract with Ontario.

The new joint operation will go with the name Resource Animal Center and will have a temporary home in Ontario over the next few years, according to VillWock.

The plan is to update an existing warehouse located on 1630 Shearwater St. in Ontario, who will house animal services for ARC members and will serve as a central place.

“This will be a full shelter. It just happens our temporary place where we will be in the next three to five years, “Vilvok said in an interview.

According to the documents on the agenda, documents from the ARC meeting on February 6th, the construction of the shearwater site will cost $ 3.4 million, with Ontario assuming that 58%of costs, Chino 28%, Montclair 10%and San Bernardino County 4 %

The operating costs and details are still in the planning stages, according to Ontario, with the city of Moncler being close to the final stages of approval for accession to ARC.

The planned building with an area of ​​14 873 square feet is planned to have a capacity for 100 dogs, 60 cats and various other small creatures.
