With 200 miles of beaches spanning nature reserves, rainforests and sleepy fishing villages, Riviera Nayarit is an idyllic Christmas destination for snowbirds in need of a stay in the mid-80s. Conrad Punta de Mita is about 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta and the airport, surrounded by what are known as ‘Pueblos Mágicos’ – ‘magical towns’. Think cobblestone streets, delicious restaurants and artisan shops filled with local crafts. The jewel in the crown of the region, however, is the multitude of uninhabited islands, the most famous of which are the Marietas Islands, and the hidden Playa Escondida is not to be missed. But you don’t have to wander far to have a good time. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, family or group of friends, the accommodation has plenty to keep everyone entertained. Swim in the ocean—or the infinity pool—go horseback riding, sample local cuisine at the on-site CODEX restaurant, and enjoy dinner on the beach at Mezquite among the many culinary destinations. Christmas is an extra special time to visit as guests can participate in the Mexican Mercado, which incorporates Mexican culture and holiday traditions into fun family activities such as cookie decorating, coffee roasting, cocoa mixing and sombrero painting. Those lucky enough to stay for Christmas can enjoy a traditional Mexican Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner (the latter has an adults-only option). And it’s not Christmas without presents, so of course Santa Claus will stop by to delight the children.
