The executive director of the Kennia National Hospital (KNH), Dr. William Sigilay, rejected reports that suggest that the patient who shared a ward with the late Gilbert Kinua was mentally ill.

KNH says there are no staff connecting anyone to the murder of Gilbert Kinua (right frame).

Speaking during a briefing for the press for the tragic incident, which happened on Friday, February 7, Sigiya explained that Ward 7b, where the murder took place, was appointed for patients with neurological conditions, not for mental health.

“Kinyua was admitted to Ward 7B, which specializes in the management of nervous system disorders. We would like to clarify that this ward is not defined as a state of mental health, as reportedly reported, “Sigilai said.

Kinyua, which was aimed at KNH by St. Maria Hospital, Langa, on December 11, 2024, was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder that causes severe muscle weakness, affecting all its limbs. This required him to receive a common nurse, including the feeding of pipes.

Sigilai also revealed that the hospital at the moment has no evidence showing that the outsider has entered the ward to commit the murder, but confirmed that the crime has happened and a knife that is thought to be the weapon has been restored.

“Let me say that at this point we have no evidence that someone has entered and committed the crime mentioned. However, we know from the fact that the patient was killed in the ward. We have handed the question to the Directorate for Criminal Investigation (DCI), “he said.

Sigilai also stressed that the hospital has a complex security system, including CCTV cameras in common areas and cooperates closely with employees of the National Police Service located in the hospital premises.

The Chief Executive Officer noted that Kinyua’s condition was a stable day before his tragic death.

“A team of psychologists and advisers was mobilized to support the family and to break the sad news. Recognizing experiments with grief and trauma, a 24-hour line of help for permanent psychological help was created, “Sigiya added.

In response to the murder, KNH has strengthened security measures throughout the facility to ensure the safety of its over 1800 patients, staff and visitors.

The hospital’s management expanded the condolences of the late Kinua family and confirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability throughout the investigation process.
