UNLV falls short in tight game against Boise State, 29-24 – Mountain West Connection

Boise State defeated UNLV 29-24 last night in a tight game at Allegiant Stadium. That game broke UNLV’s attendance record with 42,000 people showing up to watch the Juggernaut play. Ashton Jeanty did Ashton Jeanty things again, rushing for 128 yards and scoring the game-winning touchdown to give Boise State the win.

INSULT

The offense was solid for UNLV. Hadj-Malik Williams ran 71 yards on one of UNLV’s first offensive plays, and that was the start of Williams’ good performance. He threw for 179 yards, two touchdowns and 105 yards, while also throwing an interception in the second quarter.

Boise State was able to limit Ricky White, who caught just five balls for 57 yards, slowing the UNLV offense. Casey Cain made a great 50 yard catch and Jaden Bradley’s touchdown was a great pass from Hajj-Malik Williams that gave UNLV the lead in the 3rd quarter.

The downfall for UNLV’s offense was the offensive line. They allowed six sacks, nine tackles for loss and forced a fumble. He also limited the running game as Jai’den Thomas and Kylin James ran for just 84 yards combined. It was very disappointing to see this performance from the offensive line. It kept them out of the game.

DEFENSE

The defense should be proud of their performance. They gave Ashton Janty his lowest average of the season at 3.9 yards per carry. Jackson Woodard led that defensive effort against Jeanty, coming up with four solo tackles, ten assisted tackles and one tackle for loss. The pressure they put on Jeanty slowed him down, but he still managed to find the end zone in the fourth quarter that gave Boise State the win.

The secondary did their job. They forced Maddux Madden to make tough throws, which made his efficiency look poor. The big defensive win for UNLV was limiting Boise State to third down. They were 3/15 on third downs last night and entering this game Boise State had a third down conversion rate of 52.17%. Slowing it down kept UNLV in the game. The defense also held its own in the red zone, forcing Boise State to kick several field goals throughout the game.

Collapsing defenses allowed for big plays. They gave up huge plays of 30+ yards on many drives and allowed Madsen to run it down the field in the first quarter for 49 yards, which eventually led to a Boise State field goal.

All things considered, UNLV played great in this game, there are some things that need to be worked on over the next few weeks, but I believe they will bounce back.
