Trenton City hosts a flag raising ceremony in honor of the month of black history – Trentondaily News

On February 3, 2025, the city of Trenton launched the month of black history with a flag raising ceremony in the heart of the center of Trenton. The event, which took place on the front steps of Trenton City Hall, was a festive occasion that acknowledged the historical impact of Afro -American communities in Trenton, New Jersey and beyond.

The ceremony attended by the Verina Reynolds-Jackson Assembly, Commissioner Nina D. Melker, Mayor W. Reed Gusiora, members of the Trenton Municipal Council and the residents, presented the lifting of the Panfrican flag, a symbol of solidarity, thought and unity. The event emphasized the importance of worshiping the history, achievements and struggles of black individuals and marginalized groups around the world.

“This February we stand as a city to celebrate the heritage of black history and the various cultures that have shaped Trenton in the community that it is today,” “,” “ said Mayor Gusiora. “Raising this flag is an expression of our commitment to acknowledge the resilience of black history and to acknowledge that black history is not in the past, but a continuing story of the achievements and cultures that are evaluated in our city.”

The Vice President of the Council Jassi Edwards praise the event, claiming, “To be a black woman in America brings deep importance to me – it is a legacy of durability, strength and unwavering perseverance. As we raised this flag, we not only honored the contribution of Black Americans, but also admitted that our story is still being written. With the protection of civil rights and the initiatives of DEI, which are being attacked, we must be firm in defense of the progress that our ancestors have been fighting so difficult to achieve. Thank you to the mayor and the city of Trenton for raising this flag, a powerful symbol of our city’s commitment to truth, justice and empowerment for future generations. “

The flag promotion ceremony included the special guest speaker Shanik Taliafero, founder of Black Women in New Jersey, a musical performance of Down Richardson’s Black National Anthem, and reading poetry by Ni Sheriff.

Throughout February, City of Trenton’s City Hall (319 East State Street) will include a jazz exhibition, with displays exploring the history and musical impact of jazz.
