Kirkpatrick joined the DRPS in May after serving as a Toronto police officer for 14 years, and the speeding incident happened a month later.

“Under the CSPA, an investigation into misconduct was referred by the DRPSB to the Peel Regional Police Service,” he said. “Just two days ago, this investigative process concluded and I accepted the board’s decision and full responsibility for my actions.”

“I received a significant punishment commensurate with my rank, depriving myself of 94 hours,” Kirkpatrick added.

Durham Regional Police Board Chairman Sean Collier was also quoted in the release.

Collier said in August that “all DRPS members are expected to be exemplary in their behavior and this is especially true of the organization’s leaders.

Kirkpatrick said he “deeply” regrets his actions and admits he fell short of the standard he set for himself.

“I hope this serves as a reminder to DRPS that as leaders we are actually held to a higher standard, we are held accountable, and it’s a step toward the priority of building trust,” Kirkpatrick said.

“Although members are not expected to comment publicly on their disciplinary matters, as deputy chief I felt it was important to be transparent with each of you and maintain respect for the leadership of this organization,” he added.
