Birmingham protesters call on Senator Katie Britt and other selected leaders to repel against executive orders, Elon Musk – WBRC

Birmingham, Ala. (WBRC) – About 100 residents of the Birmingham region gathered outside the federal court in the city center, requesting actions from Senator Katie Britt and other elected leaders.

Their message: Stay against executive orders that they believe can cost jobs and eliminate critical social programs, including Medicaid and free school lunches.

The protest, organized by the indivisible Birmingham, focused on fears about the role of Elon Musk as head of the Ministry of Government Efficiency.

Demonstrators say that his influence in the federal government and his reported moves to review, restrict or dissolve some agencies threaten working families.

During the demonstration, the crowd repeatedly chanted, “Go to your work!” Directing their dissatisfaction with Britt, which they say does not do enough to stop these changes.

“The billionaire has no reason to be in our government, in our money, our social security number, our files or something like that,” said the protester Angelica McCain. “We’re just not about it. We’re not here for that. “

Brent Staufer, another protester, pointed out what he called a non -constitutional superpower.

“Musk is a special civil servant who is an consultative position,” Staufer said. “He does not have the constitutional power to close the whole federal agency, and we must do everything we can to restore the rule of law.”

Just weeks after the Trump administration, demonstrators say they already see red flags, especially with the reported impetus of Musk for restructuring or removing agencies that control social programs.

Protesters say that even if voters support state cuts, there are legal restrictions on how these changes can be made.

“Even if people vote for non -constitutional things to happen, the Constitution still forbids these things from happening,” Staufer said.

“No matter how many changes you want, you can’t do this without a process,” added Steve McKini. “There are constitutional pathways to do such things.”

For McCain, mother, the problem is deeply personal. She says her children rely on social programs that could be affected by these changes in politics and she believes that Brit should intervene.

She has the opportunity to reject all these commandments descending from the White House, and she is not, “McCain said. “Employees say they can leave their jobs, it’s not legal. WBRC turned to Brit’s office for comment, but has not yet received an answer. Before that, however, Britta stated his support to reduce what he calls “inflated government agencies.”
