The fifth annual Nebraska Nurses Honor Guard (NNHG) conference was held at Mahoney State Park near Ashland on October 19th. Eight NNHG members from the Fremont area were among the nearly 100 NNHG members from across the state in attendance. The theme of the conference was “Celebrating Our Mission.”
NNHG was founded in late 2019 by President Deb Zobel of Ashland. NNHG has 274 members and now has groups organized throughout the state of Nebraska. Since NNHG was organized, 600 services have been held to honor nurses at the time of their death. Carol Bolling, Fremont Area Co-Chair of NNHG, states that it is a privilege and an honor to honor fellow nurses who have dedicated themselves to care and compassion throughout their nursing careers.
Zobel was recognized for receiving the Senior Volunteer Step Up Award presented by Governor Pilon in Omaha earlier this month.
In 2025, NNHG will award two scholarships to nursing and/or nursing students pursuing a graduate degree and establish a nursing fund in need. The amount is to be specified.
The NNHG also accepts items of historical interest. One nursing gown and cap from each of Nebraska’s past nursing schools will also be accepted.
Julie Burney, a motivational humorist, was the afternoon host. She reminded us that we have influence regardless of our title.
At the invitation of family members of a deceased nurse, services honoring nurses may be held at visitations, funerals, celebrations of life, etc. This invitation can be extended on the NNHG website — nebraskanursehonorguard.org — or extended through the funeral home.
