Tesla announced Friday evening that it had reached a major production milestone: the 1 millionth Model Y rolled off the assembly line at GA4, the general assembly line located at the Fremont factory in California (it’s under a tent!).
Tesla posted a photo of three Model Y cars, in red, white and blue, surrounded by employees and balloons that displayed the number “1,000,000.”
Lars Moravi, Vice President, Vehicle Engineering at Tesla, celebrated the achievement by posting responses to X saying “memories!” and “Congratulations to everyone who worked on the tent from Summer Camp 2018 to 1,000,000 Model Y!”.
The milestone marks an important moment in the evolution of Tesla’s GA4 production line, which began in a temporary structure, or “big tent,” set up outside the Fremont factory in June 2018. This summer, Tesla had to ramp up production to meet growing demand for the Model 3, the company’s first mainstream sedan. The first Model 3 to roll off the GA4 line was assembled on June 8, 2018, demonstrating Tesla’s ability to innovate under pressure and scale production.
The Model Y, the company’s compact crossover SUV, debuted in March 2020 and quickly became one of the company’s best-selling vehicles, and also the world’s best-selling car, gas or electric. Known for its versatility, spacious interior and impressive range, the Model Y shares about 75 percent of its components with the Model 3, making it easier for Tesla to scale production.
Tesla’s production continues to impress with its efficiency. Fremont continues to build cars like tomorrow, which has helped the company meet new goals and EV sales goals, thanks to a tent. The annual production capacity of the Fremont factory as of the third quarter of 2024 is 100,000 Model S/X and more than 550,000 Model 3 and Model Y.
