Ever since mobile phones became a common place in schools, teachers have been trying to find the best way to deal with them.

“I think they can be distraction and that this absence during school time is positive,” says Scott Jenson of Fremont public schools.

In public schools at Fremont, only elementary students are forbidden to have a mobile phone during school, but in the area puts restrictions when older students can and cannot have their phones.

But some legislators believe that restrictions may not go far enough and are looking for a complete ban on phones in the classroom.

“Classroom technology is definitely interfering with learning and children tell us this,” says Patrick Tyler, a Boys Town researcher research hospital.

Patrick Tyler was one of the team of Boys Town researchers who looked at how social media and smart phones affect developing brains.

Their research has found that students have anxiety, difficulty sleeping and a bad self -contained image, among other problems due to the constant exposure to social media that smart phones can bring.

Tyler and his team found that even in the low class, children receive hundreds of updates and notifications a day.

“The average number was 247 in just one day. Some went to 4000 notifications for a child, and 25 percent of them happened during school hours,” says Tyler.

Both Tyler and Jenson say they believe that downloading phones from school would be a good idea for students and teachers.

If the new bill is adopted, the LB149 will require all schools to adopt a policy prohibiting the use of mobile phones by school students or school functions.

This is a step that many areas have already taken and as long as they allow the use of a mobile phone now, Jenson believes that students will adapt quickly if phones are prohibited.

“Some students were really happy that they were not distracted with the phone during the day. They think they are more able to concentrate on their home tasks and things like that,” Jenson said.
