Caleb Brasswell, owner of a first -reaction to Rocky Mount, said it was a trend he saw first -hand.

“I’ve had so many stolen vehicles lately,” Brasswell said.

Brasswell said the various technology modes available to support car theft have helped this trend.

Thieves use high -tech tools such as RFID devices, keys exchange and re -programming the car’s electronics to steal them.

“The day, if you let your car run at the gas station, someone can take it. But now it can be, if you are home where you think you are safe, it may come to take it,” he said.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau offers tips for protecting your car:

  • Use the lock on the steering wheel or the brake
  • Always lock your doors

More sophisticated methods include the installation of a vehicle immobilizer, fuse interruptions and switches to kill and deactivate the starter or ignition. Drivers can also invest in GPS tracking systems to recover a stolen car.

Rocky Mount Police Department is investing in technology to help limit the growing number of thefts. Including an instrument called Resourcoreter, which uses historical crime data to predict crime trends, identify hot spots and allow patrols to focus on high -crime areas.
