Martial Arts Instructor in Talahassi inspired to teach by a daughter killed 20 years ago – WCTV

Tallahasee, Florida (WCTV) – A Talahassi man is on a mission to help people acquire self -defense skills through martial arts.

Scott Gilbert, a fifth -degree black belt and the owner of the EXALT martial arts in Talahasi, said his love for practice began years ago.

“I always made martial arts when I was a child,” he said.

But behind his passion, there is a deeper meaning to teach other people to defend themselves.

“My daughter was killed. My child did not get that chance to protect himself, “he said. “I re -channeled my anger for what happened to take advantage of the children in the future. And I wanted to be a teacher on him, so I can help other families so that they do not have to go through the same things I had to experience. “

His pain has become a passion, putting a tone and creating a positive environment for anyone going through the door.

“We don’t criticize them. We don’t tell them they can’t do anything. There are so many that we have to tell them “Hey, you’re doing great.” When someone says they can’t do it, “No, you can do it,” so it’s a safe place where they know they will not be harassed here. It doesn’t stand up, “he said.

Gilbert hosts a free self -defense class this Saturday in Mahan Drive’s Exalt martial arts. The kindergarten through a fifth grade class is from 10am to 11am, and the teenage and adult grade is from 11:30 to 13:00
