Wisconsin DNR brings awareness of chronic disease loss – Weau

Chippewa County, WIS. (Weau) – Wisconsin DNR brings awareness of chronic disease loss found in Chippewa County.

DNR has been testing for CWD since 1999. The hunting season in 2024 was the first time you have a wild deer in Chippev County testing positively for CWD.

The deer was obtained by a hunter who filed it for sampling.

DNR asks local hunters to continue to send harvested deer to test next fall to maintain CWD low level.

“In the meantime, we always encourage hunters to report the sick deer they see. It can be simple when you are out in the forest at any time of the year. If you see a deer that shows these classic CWD signs, we definitely want to know about it. We catalog all these local reports and then we will receive a test if we are able, “says Erin Larson, a healthcare professional who hears a healthcare professional at WisConsin DNR.

Larson adds hunting wild deer not only helps to manage the size and health of deer herds, but also the spread of chronic loss of disease.
