Neighbors rescue pets from devastating Glendale house fire – Arizona family

GLENDALE, AZ (AZ Family) — A family of three in Glendale is now without a place to call home after a devastating fire broke out in their house Sunday afternoon.

Around 3:30 p.m., the Phoenix Fire Department received a call about a house fire near 43rd Avenue and Bell Road. When they arrived, crews saw heavy smoke coming from the roofline.

The owner of the house said The Arizona family that she, her husband and their daughter were not home at the time, but their two dogs were inside.

She said a handful of her neighbors got her pets out safely. Xavier Hicks was one of those heroic neighbors.

“My wife and a few other neighbors’ priority was to get the dogs out and make sure they were safe,” Hicks said.

He said neighbors also used water hoses to fight the fire until crews arrived. His wife captured their actions on her cell phone camera.

One of the homeowners said neighbors called her about the fire and said she saw the smoke while driving to the house.

She said she was shocked and in tears when she said it all happened on her husband’s birthday.

“I can’t imagine what it would be like if I came to my home and found everything ruined and ruined. I can’t even imagine what they must be going through right now. It’s terrible,” said neighbor Raymond Eady.

The family was seen gathering the few things that were not damaged by the fire and loading them into their car. Hicks said he felt sorry for them, but said they were like family and the neighbors would support them.

“I know as a community we’re going to do everything we can to take care of them,” Hicks said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
