Wilmington approves a new tournament facility: The leaders of the city of Wilmington have approved permission to use the club in Midtown, allowing new internal and external tournament courts at The Racquet Club Holly Tree. Plans to expand the facility

The site, located on 4950 Holly Tree and 304 Westchester Roads, has been working as a private tennis facility since 1994, including 10 tennis courts, club house and pool. The permission for special use was necessary to add impenetrable surfaces and space indoors, according to Sam Potter, a project developer lawyer Mike Harms.

Initially, the proposal included a simulated golf driving range that was removed due to community fears. “The amount of retreat we received from the community and neighbors and, to be honest, the planning staff made us withdraw the golf facility,” Potter said.

Project Impact and Future Expectations

The new tournament facility is expected to generate about 364 average daily vehicles, which is about 60 more than the current use of the site.
