FREMONT – Newaygo’s Porter Slominski had a big night to help close out the regular season with a 21-14 comeback win over Fremont on Friday night.
The Packers took the lead late in the first quarter with a 68-yard touchdown run by Karter Frens and a 2-point conversion by Khai Noordyk that put them ahead 8-7. The lead grew when quarterback Brady Crossley found Asa Barnhardt for a 40-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
However, the Lions came out with renewed vigor after the break.
The Lions fired off an unanswered rushing score by Slominski and a touchdown reception by Wesley Manning in the third quarter to steal the lead.
The Packers were given another opportunity as Chance Crawford recovered a fumble late in the game. Despite moving the ball inside the Lions’ 20-yard line, the Packers would eventually turn the ball over on downs.
Slominski had 178 yards on 24 carries with two scores for Newaygo and had 72 yards on just two catches. Quarterback Blake Kerr threw for 105 yards and a touchdown.
