Local Video Store Sets Odds Open for 14,000 Days in a Row – Action News 5

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – In a world where everything is at your fingertips, it’s never been easier to watch your favorite movies, but there’s one video store in Somerville that’s one of the last still standing. .

Stop the video off Highway 64 has been owned by William Gilbert since 1988 and hasn’t closed its doors a day in that time.

“After four, five, eight years I was like I’ve never closed and then I was like I can’t close now; I have to set a world record,” Gilbert said.

Now you might be wondering, in an industry where stores are closing left and right, how he manages to stay open every day, but for Gilbert, it’s all about creativity.

“You have to be very good at using money where it needs to be used,” Gilbert said.

Another way is to offer more offers than you can imagine, such as winning a free movie if you get a green board, five movies for ten dollars, or the Gilbert special.

“Someday they’ll have my casket, three rent get a fourth free, that’s my specialty, I’ve been doing it for years,” Gilbert said.

He says it’s not the most profitable industry, but his message is simple.

“My thing is always this, you don’t have to spend all your money with me, just a little bit,” Gilbert said.

If you’re ever in need of the latest releases or some VHS throwbacks, you’ll want to stop by Stop the video.
