Just days after announcing that it had produced its 7 millionth car, Tesla announced that the Fremont factory had produced its 1 millionth Model Y from the GA4. That’s an incredible feat considering the Fremont factory is a facility that wasn’t built specifically for Tesla production.
The Fremont factory is Tesla’s first production facility. According to the Q3 2024 update letter, the factory currently has an installed annual vehicle capacity of over 550,000 Model 3 and Model Y and 100,000 Model S and Model X. This is less than facilities such as Giga Shanghai, which can produced over 950,000 Model 3s and Model Ys, but it’s already very impressive.
The big tent has come a long way 😎

After all, the Fremont factory began life as a traditional auto plant. Unlike later facilities like Gigafactory Texas, which was built specifically to produce the Model Y and Cybertruck, the Fremont factory required a lot of strategy and creativity before it could produce the Model 3 and Model Y at scale. These include the use of spring structures to accommodate an additional common assembly line for the Model 3, a move that caught the attention of Tesla shorts.
This was highlighted by the company in its celebratory post on social media platform X. As noted by Tesla on its official X account, the first Model 3 from the GA4 line at the Fremont Factory was completed on June 8, 2018. Since then, the GA4 has grown into an impressive production line for vehicles, which managed to produce the 1 millionth Model Y at the plant on Friday, October 25, 2024. That’s not bad at all for a facility that was derided by critics as a mere “tent.”
I think we all collectively forget that the Fremont was built by GM, bought by Tesla for a fraction of its cost. It was not designed for modern electric car production, so Tesla had to resort to unthinkable measures to build 4 different models, including tents in the parking lot. https://t.co/eaPcc0qjjN

The Model Y is Tesla’s best-selling vehicle and currently dominates the electric vehicle segment in the United States. The all-electric crossover also has a strong presence in Europe and China. Last year, the Model Y became the world’s best-selling car by volume, the first all-electric car to win the title.
