By Movieguide® Contributor
FIXER UPPER stars Chip and Joanna Gaines explained how they keep their marriage strong after decades together and juggling extremely busy schedules.
“We are together a lot. We love each other, we like each other, we pull for each other,” Chip told TODAY. “I think it has to be argued, even when things aren’t great, you fake it until you make it. Not even intentionally like us [never] there was a strategy behind it.”
“We just evolved early in our marriage into the rhythm of being nice to each other,” he continued. “It’s just like being nice to each other and pulling for each other.”
“We talk things to death,” Joanna added. “We drink coffee in the morning and we’ll sit and talk about everything. I mean, there’s always a connection.
This constant communication allowed the duo to create an empire, from cookbooks to merchandise lines to their own television network. However, even with this success, the couple remains focused on their family and puts their children ahead of their careers.

“They are so young and we want to give them the chance to have a normal childhood,” Joanna explained. “Family is the most important thing in the world.”
As their children have grown, the couple has focused on sharing more with their children and bringing friendship into the relationship rather than just standing in positions of power.
“The older I get, I realize that the more humanity these kids can see in me, the more we’ll bond,” Joanna said. “I want them to see the highs and the lows so that when they have anxiety about school or relationships, they know it’s a safe place for them to come to me.”
