Owner Laura Sharp says that the opening of the only independent bookstore in the city, literally a bookstore, is her dream work. Here is a look at what it takes to open the doors.

Gilbert, Ariz.

The owner of “Literal Bookstore” Laura Sharp has started selling books on pop shops on farmers, festivals and local companies.

“Everywhere we could put a tent and have public books. We did it,” Sharp said.

The pop -up markets slowly became the integration of the bookstore into already established commercial premises and now the first place for bricks and mortar at the store is just outside the center of Gilbert near the Gilbert Road and Rawhide Avenue.

“We were grown in these small baby steps as the community supported the store little by little until we were able to get the space right here,” Sharp said.

Sharp has been in the Gilbert community for more than a decade, raising their children there, and she said that she and her husband were always wondering when Gilbert would receive an independent bookstore.

“I wanted Gilbert to have an independent bookstore. There was no one, and it had the feeling that the void our community deserved to have,” Sharp said.

And Sharp is not the only one who is excited to see literally a bookstore to open his doors.

“At every stage of the business growth we were trying to offer more and more to the community,” Sharp said. “There is this interconnection between the community and the bookstore … The more the community offers us, the more we can offer.”

If you are heading for a literal bookstore this weekend, you can browse your favorite Sharp section, The Kid’s Books. Children’s literature is how she started her bookstore and is a huge part of the physical location of the bookstore.

Booking has a healthy children’s book book, everything-from-books for readers for the first time to middle-class readings and even bilingual pictures with pictures.

“This is where my heart is, in the part of the child of the bookstore,” Sharp said. “If we can excite our children from reading when they are young, they will become readers throughout their lives.”
