In Hideaway Farms, located near Cowboy Way and Rodeo Drive, two soft sticky horses named Drew and Sage stand as living symbols of the rich history of South Carolina.

“They have Drew and a sage here,” said Colin Drew of the Carolina Marsh Association.

These horses have a pedigree, which traces back to Spanish horses brought to the new world by conquistadors.

“They can follow their roots back into their genetic markers to the Spanish horses, which were transferred to the new world by the conquistadors,” Drew explained.

Marsh Tacky occupies a special place in the history of South Carolina. In 2010, he was declared the State Horse of Inheritance.

“These horses play a very crucial role in the state of South Carolina,” Drew noted.

Their ancestors were essential for trade during the colonial times and supported soldiers in the revolutionary and civil wars, playing a significant role in the lives of the people of the low country.

Despite its historical significance, the breed is confronted with threats that reduce their numbers.

“So in 2007, when they finally received a number of heads and began to try to establish our breed, I think we were at a total of 117 horses,” Drew said.

However, the efforts of the Carolina Marsh Association have led to resumption, with the population already around 500. The legacy of the breed is celebrated at events such as the exposition of Southeastern Wildlife (SEWE).

“The number of people who pass through and exposed to these horses in just one day is absolutely irreplaceable,” Drew said.

“These guys are just super -resistant horses. They’re frugal. They’re super durable. They’re super customized horses. They’re locked like you like no other.”
