LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – The first week of early voting has already garnered thousands of votes, with Laredo city officials already celebrating the increased numbers.
As of Thursday, October 24, nearly 16,000 people have voted.
Laredo resident Jorge Gonzalez was pleased to learn more people headed to the polls.
“I hope that young people will finally take their responsibility to get out and vote and I hope that they are listening so that they can vote for the right person,” Gonzalez said.
Alfredo Juarez, another Laredo resident, hoped that with so many people voting early, it would make Election Day more efficient.
Juarez mentioned, “I don’t like it when there are long lines. So with people voting early, there will be less long queues to wait.”
Webb County Elections Administrator Jose Luis Castillo advises people to have their IDs ready and be patient as this year’s voting is longer than usual.
According to Castillo, “Vote early because there are people who take 15 to 20 minutes too much. So it will just backup everything. Everyone has a right to vote and everyone has a right to take their time.”
This election cycle, people will be able to vote for President, Vice President, Texas Senator and countless local politicians.
Castillo recommends that if people see a long line at their first stop, they can head to one of the 10 polling stations open for early voting throughout the county to ease the wait time.
Despite the wait, Juarez remains excited to vote, especially when it comes to the presidential ticket.
Noting, “I see some huge differences between the candidates and I want to give my input and vote for who I think is the better choice.”
On election day, there will be 41 polling stations open across the county and members of the community can vote at any of the locations.
