Council member Luke Widel asked UNCW geology professor Roger to submit a proposal for a new park at the Wilmington Municipal Council meeting this week.

Sheu began to look at the property located on 3990 Independence Blvd., following a resonance proposal, suggesting over 500 residential units there. The proposal was withdrawn, but Sheu pointed to a study of the city that implies a different possible future.

“There is a lot of interest and concern about the growth and development and congestion of traffic and at the same time the desire to have green space and natural areas.”

The property is a former farm, so Sheu offered a park for education for agricultural and forestry.

“Looking at this, we can talk about plant communities, wildlife, biodiversity, carbon storage and everyone else,” he said.

Sheu said the park could also be a water monitoring station for the purposes of Stem education. And with a plot of 60 acres, he said there was still a lot of space for natural paths.

The mayor Bill Sappho said he supported the idea and was excited about the prospect of adding another park in this part of the city.

The property is partially owned by New Hanover County and partly by the heirs of the original ownerWhich means the path to a future park is somewhat complicated. The property is bound in court for the foreseeable future, but Commissioner Dane Skalis suggested that the property is a golden opportunity to preserve the green space and the creation of a new part.
