Goons Documentary: Knuckles, Beatings and Fear in the Suburbs – The Arizona Republic

I play

The fatal beating of a 16-year-old at a Halloween party in southeast Phoenix has caught everyone’s attention. What happened to Preston Lord that night at Queen Creek?

And why did the arrests for his death take so long?

Arizona Republic videographer Michael Chow captures the story in the documentary The Chase.

Arizona Republic reporters were the first to link the beating of Preston Lord to the “Gilbert Goons,” a gang of teenagers whose attacks on other teens had gone unchecked by police for more than a year.

Robert Anglen and Elena Santa Cruz interviewed scared parents and frustrated community members and took to social media to get the story. They detailed how the Goons recorded their quick attacks on teenagers in parks and garages, outside fast food restaurants and at house parties.

Gilbert was the link to the attacks, which also occurred in Mesa, Chandler and Pinal Counties. Authorities didn’t begin making arrests in the Goon attacks until the Republic report, when they reopened closed cases and began new investigations.
