Washington street entrance to Forest Hills started this month. This project will temporarily close public access to the Blackwel and Bussey Brook Meadow path across the Washington street entrance from February to October 2025. Visitors can gain access to Arborway’s Forest Hills entrance or a new pedestrian -input input on Arboretum Road to Roslindal.

The entrance to Washington Street will be closed for repairs in early February, with alternative access to visitors and travelers provided by the Forest Hills gate and a new entrance from Arboretum Road Washington Street.

Launched in 2022, the entrance improvement project aims to improve visitors’ experiences and welcome the Arboretum portals with its surrounding communities. The first phase prioritizes improvement to access to ecological justice communities and local health and wellness facilities and includes Topola entrances, Walter Street and Washington Street entrances. Boston -based landscape architects Michael Van Van Valkenberg leads a redesign for this phase of detecting a comprehensive vision for the arboretum entrances.

The arboretum will resume this key entrance, improving public connectivity with both the Arboretum landscape and the Forest Hills Station Public Transport Center, using private philanthropic support and civic partnerships. In addition, the renovation aims to increase public knowledge of Bussey Brook Meadow and its role as urban diva in ecological research and a unique destination for visitors. He also acknowledges the centrality of the entrance to the Roselindale Gate, an alternative to green transport for travelers between Roslindal and a park on the southwestern corridor.

Established in the 1990s, the entrance to Washington Street is associated with the pedestrian path in Blackvel, which is enhanced by the wild and provides access to the historic landscape of the Arboretum of South Street. Renovation work will extend access and views by removing the chain bond fence, selective trimming of trees and removing invasive material and adding new plantations, including the poplar of the grove, to shade the ADA-access area for seating in the entrance. Improved signs will orient and inform the public and increase the visibility of the Arboretum from Forest Hills.

This renewal is possible through collaboration with the city of Boston and MBTA, and financial support provided by a wide range of Arboretum donors, including Conservancy Park Conservcy. Arnold’s Arboretum evaluates the patience and support of visitors and neighbors as improvements to the progress of the entrance to the Washington street. Re -opening the input and path of Blackvel is expected by the end of autumn 2025.
