Santa Fe Center strives to support through funding, shows and more – Phmuseum

Open until March 15, Center Santa Fe’s Open Calls offers a project development grant, a project to start the project and numerous awards and opportunities aimed at expanding the photographic canon.

Established in 1994 in New Mexico, the Santa Fe Fai Center supported projects based on lenses, with social and environmental focus through funding, education, public platforms, partnerships and exhibitions for more than three decades. At the center, we know how challenging it can be to maintain concept projects to distribution, so we help to support the life of projects through the project development grantile, mentoring, the Santa Fe Santa Fe Professional Development Program, publications and exhibitions.

This year, candidates can submit their works in the following categories:

Project launch grant offers a $ 5,000 providing those with full or almost completed documentary projects or a series of fine arts that gives them impetus to share their artistic vision with the world. The judge of this edition is Keith W. Jenkins, Vice President of Visualizations and Music Strategy in National Public Radio. The project development grant provides $ 5,000 funding to support artists with permanent art projects, documentary or photojournalistic projects. It is intended to help creators further develop their work, while offering seminars for professional development and opportunities for public performance. Aimed at enhancing unprecedented voices and sharing marginalized stories, the Me& Eve Award provides $ 1,000 financial support for a woman or LGBTQIA2S+ a photographer aged 40 and more. The winning project of the last edition Sizes Anna Reed examines the intimate relationship between the body and the machines that question the boundaries between them. This year’s jury is Leonor Mamana, the deputy director of the photos at Bloomberg BusinessWeek / Pursuits.

Sharing our truths is now more important than ever. We want to offer opportunities for sharing and discussing innocent stories and conducting urgent dialogues for vulnerable communities and ecosystems. At the center we explore the question – how can we expand the photographic canon to illuminate unexplored stories and poorly represented communities?

The multimedia award recognizes storytellers who use visual media such as photography, video, installation, web-based works and other forms of art based on lenses to create insurmountable projects managed by a story. Projects that inspire social actions document solutive issues and enhance the votes presented insufficiently welcome. In addition to being able to present their work at a group exhibition at the Center, winners receive admission for review of Santa Fe, access to seminars for professional development, publication within Lenscratch and even more. Among the previous winners there are Food chain by Dan Fantermacher (2022), Los Olvidados by Harvey Castro (2023) or last year Hidden Stories of San Antonio by Robert Pluma.

The center goes beyond the provision of funding through the construction of a community through the Santa Fe photos, a portfolio review, scheduled for November 1-3, 2025, in Santa Fe. This event allows photographers to contact leading photography professionals, get valuable criticism for their work and make important contacts. Reviewers are internationally recognized experts from different areas of the world of photography, including museums, galleries, publishers and editors such as Skye Battles (Photo Editor, Wired), Daniel George (Submission Editor and Participation Writer, Jesse Wender (editor -in -chief Photos (Photo Editor, The New York Times) and Brittany Corals (curator, Arizona Museum of Arts), among others. In addition, artists can currently apply for three different categories within the central awards. The jury awards for the center include: Pauline Wermare (a photography curator at the Brooklyn Museum), Andrea Wise (Photo Editor, Art Director and Visual Producer at Propublica) and Alice Gabriner (Consulting Director of the Center for Contemporary Documentation).

What does the Center in applications seek and how can candidates get the most out of the process? Laura Wzorek Presley replies:

Projects may be elevated or released, depending on the written statements. If the applicant is not a strong writer, I would recommend checking with an editor or someone who can help. Give the biggest context as possible, as where this is happening in the world and what is happening now, which is different from before. Are there any data, cards or historical information that can help the viewer understand the topic? If so, use them.

With the exception of artists, Center Santa Fe offers programs specifically designed for teachers. The Callanan Excellence in Teaching Award reflects the institution’s dedication to the Community and recognizes the role of education in individual and collective growth. The award distinguishes high school, college or postgraduate teachers who need to be nominated by their students or colleagues (s) to be considered. The winner will receive financial support of $ 5,000, access to seminars for professional development and inclusion in the annual printed program management of the center. They will also be invited to participate in the Sante Fe symposium. In 2025, the recipient of the award will be selected by Kathleen Sanker (an artist, photographer and professor at Community College St. Charles), who was the winner of last year’s edition.

For more than 30 years, Center Santa Fe has greatly supported the world of photography, positively affecting the life and career of more than 2100 photographers through various programs. A key part of their history is Alumni Archives, a collection that really represents their photographic community. An annual independent court hearing elects photographers whose work demonstrates innovation and artistic research, contributing to the development of photography itself.
