KDOT Engineer explains how I-70 Polk-Quincy Viaduct Construction affects your trip-wibw

Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) – Local, government and federal employees have spent decades planning the Polk -Kwin Viaduct Viaducts Construction Project.

“We are really softened by the raw curve of the third and I-70, this curve is one of the sharpest of the I-70 between Denver and St. Louis,” said Topeca Subway engineer Steve Baalman.

KDOT says your device will change from Monday, February 10th.

“Topeka Boulevard itself will be closed through traffic,” Baalman said. “We keep a lane north of the 3rd street moving north that will be able to go west of the I-70 and if you come from north of the river you will be able to come south but you will have to go west on I-70. “

Baalman says the new bridge will be almost 90% completed by the end of the year.

To demolish the old one and connect the new means that I-70 from rough Topeka Blvd. The 8th St. Saint will be completely closed for all traffic in about seven months, beginning in the spring of 2026.

Baalman added that they did their best to keep in mind driving and success, but they did what they had to do.

“This is a significant reconstruction,” Baalman said. “There was no reasonable way to maintain existing access, as it was before, we need to create limited access to give us a place to build a new alignment.”

One example of this is that you can now go straight to Avenue Kansas, as today it is reopened to one lane in each direction.

KDOT will host a public meeting on Thursday, February 27 from 5:00 pm in the Cyrus K. Holliday building to learn about the new project and talk to the project staff.
