The 10-year-old boy who was reportedly bitten by a coyote on his way to school in Irvine on Tuesday, Oct. 22, tested negative for coyote DNA, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Thursday.
“Coyote DNA was not found on the clothing,” said Tim Daly, a spokesman for Fish and Wildlife. “Dog DNA was found.”
The boy was riding his bike to Portola Springs Elementary School and was near Pathway when he stopped to take off his jacket, said Irvine police Sgt. Carrie Davis said. He felt something on his lower leg and knew he had been bitten.
After arriving at school, the boy reported the injury and was treated by his doctor for a minor skin break.
“We have the child’s testimony and the minor trauma, along with him seeing the coyote run from his direction,” Davis said.
Daley said Fish and Wildlife trappers have not found a coyote in the area after trying for several days.
