Birmingham is seeking a $ 1 million grant to upgrade traffic signals – Alabama’s News Leader

Birmingham, Ala. – Traffic in Birmingham may soon run more than thanks to the potential grant from the Ministry of Transport in Alabama. The Birmingham City Council authorizes the mayor to complete a grant, which can provide up to $ 1 million to modernize traffic signals throughout the city, striving to reduce carbon emissions.

Birmingham currently has over 700 intersections. Council Chairman Darrell O’Couin said many of these intersections have lost contact with the city traffic control center over time. “Repairing this problem will minimize the time spent in intersections, which will lead to less fuel consumption and subsequently reducing carbon emissions,” O’Kwin said.

The grant application seeks to restore the connectivity to these motion alerts. “This will be our second attempt to receive funding for this project,” O’Kwin added.

The city will need to match $ 450,000 for a 12-month term if the grant is approved.
