Nicole Kidman is still reeling from the death of her mother Janelle Kidman last month, and she just made a rare, heartbreaking statement about it. The 54-year-old opened up about her mother and it proves you’re never too old to need your mother.
“I wish my mom was here,” the Oscar winner said The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday evening at Lioness Season 2 Premiere at the Linwood Dunn Theatre. “That would be the only thing I would say. Everything is great with work, but I wish mom was here.’
The perfect couple the star added that things have been “difficult” since her mother passed away. “The road is difficult. I behave,” she said.
It’s so sad! I can’t imagine the pain of losing your mother. It doesn’t matter that she is 50 or that she is a mother herself. This loss can feel overwhelming no matter what, and our hearts go out to her.
Kidman learned of her mother’s tragic death before she won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for her work in Halina Rein’s film Baby girl. Raine accepted the award on behalf of Kidman, who wrote about the moment, per Us Weekly, “I arrived in Venice today to find out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed away. I am in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her, she shaped me, guided me and made me.”
“I am extremely grateful to be able to say her name to all of you through Halina, the collision between life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken,” continued the statement read by Raine.
Kidman’s father Anthony Kidman died in 2014, and at the time her youngest daughter Faith, who she shares with husband Keith Urban, was just 3 years old. In a 2019 interview TatlerKidman shared how motherhood has affected her grief. “My three-year-old said, ‘But you’re not going to be so sad tomorrow, are you?’ That’s when you realize you have to be okay,” she said. “Because they need to know that they’re safe, that their mother isn’t going to fall apart. Inside? I was beyond broken. But I had to pull myself together.”
“I jumped into life. Let’s get on a plane. Let’s try things out. Let’s do it. Because who knows, right?” she added of her outlook on life.
Her vulnerability and openness to continue living even after unimaginable grief is truly inspiring.
