MADISON — The Madison Police Department is investigating after a single shot was fired at the West Towne Mall late Friday morning.
West Towne is one or two major retail centers in Wisconsin’s capital city.
According to a press release, officers were dispatched to the mall’s main entrance, located off Gammon Road, at 11:36 a.m.
Video shows two people near a cell phone store when one of them pulls out a gun and fires at another person across the hall. It is unclear if that person was injured during the incident.
The participants fled the shopping center and got into a car.
No one was injured in the shopping center. And no people with gunshot wounds showed up at local hospitals.
Officers and detectives spoke with mall employees and witnesses and collected digital evidence. This evidence will not be released at this time in order not to jeopardize the investigation.
One of the K-9s was brought in to help search for physical evidence.
The mall followed its safety protocols when this incident occurred. Officials closed businesses and moved customers to safe areas of their stores. Many shops have reopened since 1:30 p.m
Several businesses located outside but near the mall were locked down. Those stores have since reopened.
Vale Phillips Memorial High School was placed on lockdown following this incident. A letter was sent to the families informing them of the shooting.
Again, no injuries have been reported at this time. This remains an active investigation.
