2024 – The year of patient empowerment Opinion – Tallahassee Democrat

2024 led to several achievements and approvals in healthcare, which put more control in the hands of patients. This includes everything from the presence of over-the-counter devices and medicines that were previously only available through a recipe for self-writing tests and vaccines made before only by qualified healthcare professionals.

Continuous glucose monitors can now be purchased without a prescription for anyone who wants to track their blood sugar. Progesterone birth pills only can be purchased without a prescription, while before they also require a recipe. In addition, FDA approves HPV cell testing collected by the patient instead of requiring PAP smearing. Finally, a self -administered nasal flu vaccine has received approval that will not require a professional administration, as before existing flu vaccines.

With more choices and control over your own health, responsibility also increases. This is not bad. All of us, the included doctors and other healthcare professionals, we need to take more responsibility for our health. Patients’ empowerment gives several benefits to the potential of increased absorption of preventive care measures to easier access to treatment.

Given there is no increase in responsibility, which also does not increase the risk. No medicine, including those sold at the counter, is not without the risks associated with their use.

The inclusion of your doctor in your health solutions, including those concerning over -the -counter medicines and devices, is always recommended, as well as the basics of reading the packaging carefully and always guaranteed that the instructions are accurately followed.

By applying these simple protective measures to confirm the indications and instructions for use, as well as the inclusion of their doctor in these discussions, patients will position themselves well to take advantage of the ever -increasing resources available by hand while minimizing the inherent related risks.

There is no doubt that the tendency to participate in the patient in their care will continue. This provides a great value for patients, whether it is improved accessibility to health services or improved comfort and satisfaction with healthcare.

2024 saw a great movement to this trend; It will be exciting to see what 2025 brings.
