Alex Makinon at Leon County wins an emergency preparation award – Tallahassee Democrat

Leon Alex McKinnon County County Coordinator was awarded the Gary Arnold Award Award in 2025, the district announced in a press release on Monday.

“Introduced by the Florida Emergency Association (FEPA), this award recognizes an exceptional individual as their dedicated, selfless and enthusiastic service for the development of the Emergency Management Community Management,” the statement said.

The chairman of the County Commission Leon Brian Welch said that “Alex is an important part of the district team and his extraordinary efforts play a decisive role in our constant success in the protection of our community.” Here is from the publication:

Makinnon joined the management of emergency situations of Leon County in 2016 and played a major role in strengthening the opportunities for readiness and reaction of the county. His leadership during hurricanes Hermin, Michael, Idalia, Debbie and Helen, and the May 10th Epidemic guarantees coordinated and effective efforts to respond and disaster recovery.

Mackinnon also helped establish local initiatives, including the Leon Ready Online Resource Hub with disasters in the county and the annual disaster survival guide, which is better equipped with residents with major instruments to prepare and recover from disasters.

“Alex is a local and state leader in the field of emergency management,” said Leon Long County Administrator. “For nine years, it has been helping to coordinate disasters for 10 federally declared major disasters and many more. His experience and unwavering commitment had a significant impact on emergency management, both in Leon and throughout the country. “

While Makinon helped to implement emergency plans in Leon County during the Hurricane seasons in 2023 and 2024, he also shared his experience beyond the district lines, having rural communities affected by heavy storms. In 2023, he traveled to Lafayette County as part of the Emergency Center for Maintenance team to help recover efforts after hurricane Idaly. The following year, he settled in Colombia County to provide support after Hurricane Debbie, demonstrating his commitment to help others during a crisis.

“Alex’s proactive approach and the dedication to emergency management are invaluable to Leon County and then,” said the Director of Emergency Management of Leon Kevin Peters. “This award emphasizes his outstanding contribution to the safety and stability of our community.”
