Seattle’s central neighborhood has been the Center for Black Business and Culture since the 60s. The neighborhood covers four square miles tied north of East Madison Street, west of the 12th Avenue, south of South Jackson Street and east of Martin Luther King, Jr. Wei. The home of the oldest residential area in the city, many single-family homes in the central area were built before 1900. The ethnic and racial composition of the central neighborhood has always been in the stream. Mostly the Jewish and Italian neighborhood before World War I gave way to Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans until the 1930s. The Second World War brought a significant number of black Americans to the Pacific northwest. The practice of “redness”, which developed after the war, forces Black Americans to make their homes in this neighborhood, along with the Asian Americans and Americans of Latinx. While the development and growth of the population in the city has disproportionately influenced the inhabitants and businesses in the central region, the 23rd Avenue remains as the center of pride, art, spirit and joy of the community.
