The University of Nevada is building a new studio on its Lake Tahoe campus for news/talk KUNR Reno (88.7). The station, which simulcasts on KNCC Elko, NV (91.5), and approximately 10 FM translator signals across the state, plans to have the studio up and running by the summer of 2025. Additionally, a dedicated reporter from Lake Tahoe is part of an expansion program.
“The university is proud to support local lakeside journalism through this new role at our University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe campus, and we’re excited to create a space for student journalists to practice their craft, learn alongside KUNR,” said Provost Jeff Thompson in a message sent to Tahoe Daily Tribune.
With the addition of the new satellite studio on the Lake Tahoe campus, the Reynolds School of Journalism and KUNR will expand the station’s internship program, the Lake Tahoe News Project. The program allows students to report on radio and online news in areas such as energy and environment, local news, education and more, including coverage in Spanish.
“KUNR is committed to covering the Northern Nevada and Eastern Sierra region, and Incline Village and the greater Lake Tahoe community is a critical part of that coverage area,” noted KUNR General Manager Brian Duggan. “We are thrilled to receive this generous support from university leadership to help us expand our public radio mission to the Lake Tahoe University campus.”
