BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – The Mississippi Seawolves return this Saturday to take on their Baton Rouge rivals at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, and Seawolves fans, this team is built to win.
There hasn’t been a team in this city as eager to lift a trophy since the Kelly Cup champions in 1999. Since the team returned to the coast in 2022, the Sea Wolves fans have established themselves as one of the best hockey fan bases in the league and have made Biloxi a destination where free agents want to play.
“The fans, the beach, a couple of guys that have been here for a couple of years that you keep in touch with over the summer is why I love playing here,” third-year shortstop Chuck Costello said. “Everything about this place, who doesn’t love the weather down here.”
“I’m excited to be back here in our arena and see our fans again,” third baseman Phillip Wong said. “It’s been a while, so hopefully we can get a lot of people here and show them that we’re a team to be reckoned with this year.”
“I’m looking forward to the loud atmosphere and things like that,” added first-year head coach David Heaps. “We have the best fans in the FPHL, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Starting in 2022, Chuck Costello and Philip Wong have been with the team for parts of all three seasons and are looking to improve on their playoff run from a year ago.
“The growth is definitely in the locker room,” Costello said. “I think the group of guys we have this year is second to none compared to other teams in this league. We have high expectations. I know the last couple of years since we’ve been here, I’m not going to say we’ve let the fans down a little bit, but I think we’re going to be a lot better this year.”
“Last year we made the playoffs pretty early, but we weren’t good towards the end,” Wong added. “This year we have to be more consistent all year and we have to get to where we want to be.”
The home puck drop is set for 6:05 PM at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday, 10/26/2024.
