MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The 12th annual Fill the Hill event kicks off each fall with the start of UW-Madison Homecoming weekend.
Starting at 5am on Friday, flamingos will flock to Bascom Hill in a bid to raise money for the university.
For every gift given during Fill the Hill, a plastic flamingo will be placed on Bascom Hill, representing how private support helps UW-Madison maintain its educational excellence, according to UW officials. More than 100 campus areas participated in the event this year.
In 2023, $513,142 and $3 million have been raised since the start of Fill the Hill,
The tradition began in 1979. Members of the now-famous Buckets and Shovels party came up with an idea: welcome incoming students with a sea of 1,008 pink plastic flamingos on Bascom Hill.
Friday night, WMTV News 15 will have exclusive live coverage of the UW Homecoming Parade beginning at 5:45 p.m.
