Duck, North Carolina – Joseph Charles Blacaitis, 85, from Duck, North Carolina, died calmly on January 27, 2025 at the Chesapik Regional Medical Center. Born March 7, 1939 in South River, New Jersey, Joseph lives a life marked by dedication to his family, community and passions. After marriage, Joe and Sally settled in Randolph, New Jersey, where they raise a loving family before retiring in a duck.

Joseph won a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Lafayet College and was a proud member of the Teta XI Brotherhood, which provides food, housing and, most of all, a brotherhood that he appreciates throughout his life. Joe’s remarkable passion was his love for aviation. He had his first “introduction” flight in 1968 and then continued to register thousands of hours throughout his life with pilot certificates, including commercial, tools and multimotor. He also served in a New Jersey Aviation Committee, managing a large flying service and charter operation outside Caldwell, New Jersey and teaching adults for adults for student pilots working for their tool ratings. Joe was an instructor for flights with many engines and continued to provide flights throughout his retirement.

In 2015, Joe was appointed to the Dare County Airport Airport, where he was very proudly served for the rest of his life. Joe was active in many airports and power activities including participation in 100th Year holiday of the first flight in 2003 and in the last 80th Anniversary holiday at the foundation of Dare County Airport. Joe was the chairman of the Committee on Organ’s Facilities and the Event Committee. He was most enclosed by the plans of the Air Race Event Committee, which will host the Dare County Airport in May this year. Joe was also a cashier of the organ. He was glad to work at the airport and appreciated the lasting friendships he made with the other pilots. Through his dedication, passion and love to cooperate with others, he had a lasting impact on his community.

Joe also contributed a lot to the city of Duck, where he has been a resident since 1999 and has been chairman of the City City Planning Council. He also served in the Earth Committee and the Pedestrian Committee, and he and Sally participated in the initial inclusion of the city of Duck. He was very proud of Duck and diligently enjoyed his time voluntarily at all the events and all the tips when they wanted.

In his spare time, he also found a joy of fishing and gardening. He often shared talk of his catch with a smile and history, and always was looking for new spots to go into his boat and catch a “lunker”. When his children were young, he would take his son to annual fishing trips to Canada and visit all the local ponds from Northern New Jersey between them. His joy of gardening was in the cultivation of tomatoes and had friendly competitions with the neighbors whose garden gave the first harvest every year.

Joe kept his grandchildren very expensive and had special and unique relationships with each of them. You always joke with them, making them smile and spoil them with treats and trips to Captain Frank when possible. In addition to spoiling his grandchildren, there was no neighborhood dog to pass him without receiving a few treats and always stopped looking for him on their walks.

Joseph was preceded by death by his beloved parents, Antoaneta Dato and Joseph Blakaitis. He survived by his hidden wife, Sally Hergotter Blakaitis, and they share their 59th wedding anniversary this week. He leaves behind his loving daughter, John’s Gregory and her husband Rick of Wake Forest, North Carolina; His dedicated son Todd Joseph Blakaitis and his wife Joel of Annapolis, Dr.; And his hidden grandchildren, Ryan Joseph Gregory, Brade Richard Gregory, Aiden Joseph Blacaitis and Ella Grace Blakaitis. He also survived his dear sister Mary Anne Johanssen and her husband Hans from Cato, New York.

The service will be held at the funeral homes of Twiford, in Mandeo, North Carolina, at 11 am, visit at 10 am, Saturday, February 1, 2025. www.twifordfh.comS
