Bauman, who had been in death for more than half his life, was offered an agreement to recognize a life sentence, but went to court because he said he was not guilty.

The execution on Friday was the third in South Carolina since September, as the state has completed a 13-year pause in executions caused in part as employees cannot receive deadly injection drugs. The General Assembly passed a shield law and prison staff were able to find a complex pharmacy, ready to make a pentobarbital if his identity was not public.

Bauman’s death marked the first execution in the United States in 2025. Twenty -five executions were held in the country last year.

Bauman did not ask Governor Henry McMaster for pardon. But McMaster’s office released a letter denying the pardon, saying he had received informal requests and petitions to spare Bauman’s life.

Bauman’s lawyer, Lindsay Van, said he did not want to spend more decades in prison for a crime he had not committed.
