The Lawrence Girls Topeka Basketball team finished Capital City City with a loss of 58-53 to Topeka West in the game in third place on Saturday.

Chargers started the game with an early lead as the lions missed a few shots of open appearance. The senior Brynnae Johnson hit the first two buckets of the team, and Chargers scored 12 points. By the end of the first quarter, Chargers kept a lead of 17-8.

The second quarter was a complete switch. The lions attacked the rim with ease and complemented it with a 3-point shooting. The senior d’ema Barnes struck 3 in the beginning of the quarter, and Jr. Jada Baars struck one afterwards. Johnson scored nine of the next 11 Lions points, with the sophomore Kami Naulz delivering the other two.

Johnson led the team with 19 points in the game.

“Brother Johnson showed why he is a Division I player in this tournament,” said coach Jeff Dixon. “She played the whole game today. She wore the team throughout the tournament for good competition and I am super proud of how much we played. “

Thanks to the range of 17-3 in the second quarter, the lion deficit almost 10 points became a five-point lead. Topeka West prevented the lions from escaping the game with three baskets late. Until halftime, the lions lead 29-26.

As Lawrence began the second quarter with a mileage, Topeka West did the same to start the third quarter. Chargers scored eight points to get his lead back, and the lions couldn’t return it to the end of the game. The lions hit only two field goals in the first 6 minutes of a quarter, but freshman Zoe Barber secured a late spark, scoring six points and stealing the ball for his last bucket at the end of a quarter. Barber finished with 12 points.

Dixon said the lions were avoiding players during previous matches in the tournament, which led to some gaps on the court due to fatigue.

However, the lions kept the pressure on chargers late in the game and almost returned, but in the end they fell. Chargers won 58-53, leaving the lions in fourth place in the tournament.

Dixon said after the match that he was proud of the presentation of his team throughout the tournament. Regardless of the situation or the enemy, the lions continued to play hard.

“They play with their heart,” Dixon said. “It’s a dream for a coach. I am so excited by games because I want to watch it and see what they are doing. You know they’ll go hard. “

Forward, Dixon said the team should channel the intensity better, so that the high-energy forced rpm in defense does not become a sloping of offensive possessions that lead to their own speed.

“We still have to play with this level of intensity, but to slow it down so we don’t turn the ball,” Dixon said. “The turnover was probably a lot and that would probably be a big difference if we didn’t.”

The lions will then play in Oalat West on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
