400+ waiting list for 1635 Dundas Street East Shelter: Region – Durham Post

Since its opening in March 2024, a low barrier shelter on 1635 Dundas Street has provided homes and services to over 160 individuals, according to the Durham region.

The region points out that the shelter has helped 20 individuals move to different types of dwellings, participate in specific restoration programs and in some cases reunite with the family.

According to Durham, there is a list of more than 400 people waiting for 1635 on Dundas Street East. The region states that this shelter has provided basic stability, access to health services and temporary asylum for those who are experiencing homelessness.

The shelter is managed by the Center for the Autic of Christian Faith (CFOC). According to CFOC, people using the shelter have access to on -site maintenance, including:

  • Mental health and addictions supports;
  • Services for maintenance of harm, residential and employment;
  • Medical care services;
  • Arts programming; and
  • Programming of life skills

Progress

The region provided the following updates on Dundas Street 1635 East:

  • Durham Region Street’s street program received a large donation of winter clothing from the public through a partnership with 94.9 The Rock. The radio hosted Socktoberfest and fills Santa’s Santa events in October and December 2024. The region reports that the donations are equivalent to filling the bed into two pickups and have been divided into shelters in the Durham area, including 1635 Dundas Street East.
  • We are growing food Cooperates with the residents of the shelter and staff to build garden boxes. Herbs and vegetables are planted in the outer space of the building.
  • On February 1, the art exhibition “How the Light Enters” will begin at the Whitby Station Gallery. The region states that the exhibition includes works of art by the residents of the shelter. The event will last until April 13, with details available on Statingallery.ca/exhibitionsS
  • Durham’s region released a video series’Stories of sustainability“For homelessness in the area. The region states that videos emphasize real -life experiences, stigma of being homeless and available services.
  • Community Relationship Committee (CLC) continues to meet regularly. The Committee shares information, identifies problems, concerns and mitigation strategies that support the successful integration of this project and its residents into the broader community. CLC Meeting Protocols have been published on Your Durham Every month and updates are sent to subscribers.
  • A Phase 2 study was conducted in the Community in cooperation with CLC. The survey was available to residents from June 27 to September 27, 2024, to collect the planning and development of the next phase on Dundas Street from 1635 East East. The Durham area states that it remains focused on supporting those who are experiencing homelessness. As a manager of the Home and Homelessness System, the region coordinates shelter and residential services in Durham. The area follows an approach focused on housing, in which everyone supports, services and strategies leads to housing in order to help someone stop their homelessness.
