According to the USGS, three earthquakes shook parts of the southeast last night and this morning, with earthquakes hit first in Louisville, Tennessee, then Elgin, South Carolina and finally Benton, Tennessee. All three earthquakes were weak and did not create any damage or injuries, although the USGS received reports of shaking from residents through “Did you feel it?” An online earthquake reporting tool.
The first earthquake struck at 20:17 last night just outside Louisville, Tennessee, hitting a depth of 15.1 km. This magnitude of the 1.5 earthquake struck an area of continuing weak seismicity near the Appalachian Mountains.
The second earthquake struck at 3:47 hrs near Elgin, South Carolina. This magnitude 2.0 event has hit a depth of 3.1 km and is on the site of a continuing earthquake, which has been a puzzling seismologist over the last few years.
On Monday, December 27, 2021 at 2:18 pm in the afternoon, an unusual earthquake was struck in the same common zone, as dozens were reported in 2022, 2023 and 2024. This first earthquake with magnitude 3 3 strikes 30 miles north of Colombia, South Carolina at a depth of only 3.1 km. More than 3,100 residents reported to USGS that they consider it at the time, as a shaking report comes from as far as Rock Hill, which is on the border of the state north/South Carolina. While many considered the earthquake, Palmo had no reported damage. This earthquake was followed by 10 more ranges in intensity between magnitude 1.5 to magnitude 2.6 event. The second earthquake struck three hours twenty minutes after the first. The last earthquake in this series hit the morning of January 5, bringing an end to the earthquakes there. But the swarm returned many times in 2022, rattling locals and disturbing local officials who were not sure about their source or cause.
In the last 365 days, there have been 35 earthquakes in South Carolina, many of which are located near the earthquake this morning. The most intensive earthquake in the last year in South Carolina was an event with magnitude 2.7, which struck near Elgin on March 9th. Scientists are not yet positive about what is behind this earthquake activity.
The third earthquake of the Southeast series struck at 4:40 am near Benton, Tennessee. This earthquake, which struck from a depth of 16.9 km, had a magnitude of 1.9. This quake struck in the same common area of seismic activity as the first.
